From Silicon Valley Fintech to the Footsteps of the Prophet ﷺ — The Journey Behind OneMat

Arash Izadpanah’s story does not begin with entrepreneurship — it begins with migration. Born in Iran, raised in America from the age of five, and surrounded by parents who lived academic, secular lives, Arash grew up believing in God but never practicing any particular faith. His early life was defined by ambition, achievement, and an unshakable sense that something essential was missing.

By his early twenties, Arash entered the payments industry and rapidly ascended: investigator → supervisor → manager → VP → Chief Risk Officer → founder and CEO of a fintech company. Outwardly, it was success. Inwardly, there was unease.

The deeper he went into the world of high-interest credit, chargebacks, and underwriting, the more he questioned whether his work aligned with the values he felt awakening inside him.

For the first time, he felt peace. He felt home.

“He found truth and wisdom in each path, but his heart ultimately led him back to Islam – the faith of his birth, rediscovered as the faith of his soul.”

Then, at 40 years of age, everything changed.

A spark — a need to search for truth — ignited.
Arash began a sincere exploration of the world’s faith traditions: Hinduism for two years, then Christianity, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism. He found truth and wisdom in each path, but his heart ultimately led him back to Islam — the faith of his birth, rediscovered as the faith of his soul.

For the past 15 years, Arash has lived as a practicing Muslim. He has since retired from fintech, relocated closer to the Muslim world, and is now raising five children with his wife Sara — determined to give them a life rooted in Muslim community, values, and spiritual grounding.

It was during his spiritual re-centering that another realization struck him:
Almost every Muslim today prays on synthetic mats — patterned, busy, foamy rugs that distract the eyes and insulate the forehead from the earth.

But the Prophet ﷺ didn’t.

He prayed on the ground — on earth, palm leaves, woven reeds, and other natural elements.
Sujood was physical. Grounded. Connected.

This discovery planted the seed for OneMat.

But the mission behind OneMat is far bigger than a product.

Across the Muslim world, Arash saw something heartbreaking:
division. misunderstanding. sectarianism.
Many differences are real, but many are fueled, exploited, and amplified by external forces — forces that benefit when the Ummah is fractured and unfocused.

Arash began asking himself:

“What if we could unite around what we all agree upon?
What if we returned to the universal foundations — La ilaha illallah, Muhammadun Rasulallah — and the authentic practices shared by every school of Islam?”

One such shared foundation is the place of sujood.

Across Sunni, Shia, Sufi, and all other Muslim traditions, there is agreement:
The Prophet ﷺ prayed on natural materials.

This is where OneMat was born — not as a business, but as a unifying movement.

A return to natural sujood.
A return to prophetic grounding.
A return to what connects us rather than divides us.

Today, OneMat is more than a premium natural-fiber prayer mat.
It is a symbol — a small but meaningful step toward healing fractures within our global Ummah by focusing on our shared foundations and our shared love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Why OneMat Exists

Many Muslims struggle with focus and khushūʿ in prayer. In studying how the Prophet ﷺ prayed, we were reminded of something simple: he prayed upon natural surfaces.

We asked: How can we return to this tradition — while ensuring comfort and durability for modern homes?

Our Common Ground

The Ummah is diverse — in culture, scholarship, and geography. Yet some truths unite us. Across all schools, it is agreed that the Prophet ﷺ prayed upon natural surfaces — earth, reeds, palm leaves.

We believe there is something powerful in returning to this common ground. When we prostrate upon what Allah created, we are reminded of humility.
