What This Establishes

The Prophet ﷺ declared the earth itself a divinely sanctioned surface of worship. This is universally accepted across all Sunni schools (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, Hanbali) and Shia scholarship.

The Prophet ﷺ Prostrated Directly on Earth and Mud

Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan | Hadith 836
“I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prostrating in mud and water, and I saw the mark of mud on his forehead.”
This narration is rigorously authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) and undisputed.

What This Establishes

The Prophet ﷺ did not avoid natural surfaces. He did not insist on layered textiles. He embraced direct contact with earth in sujūd.

He Prayed on Palm-Fiber and Reed Mats

Khumrah (Small Palm-Fiber Mat)
Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Prayer | Hadith 381: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray on a khumrah.”
Sunan Abi Dawud | Hadith 656: “…he would pray on a small mat (khumrah).”

Hasir (Larger Palm-Leaf Mat)
Sunan Abi Dawud | Hadith 658: “…he prayed on a mat (ḥaṣīr) and we would sprinkle water on it.”

The Prophet ﷺ used: Earth, Mud, Palm fiber, and Reed mats. These are natural materials grown from the earth.

Shia Narrations: Prostration on Earth or What Grows From It

Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih

“Prostration is only valid on the earth or what grows from it, except what is eaten or worn.”
